Yogyakarta is a cultural city in Indonesia. Is this city important to Indonesia tourism? Actually when we talk about tourism in Indonesia we will just think of Bali, the Island of God that became a haven for tourists. Even in some jokes, often there is a question, which part of Bali is Indonesia'?
Until now the main destination of tourist is still Bali. What about the cities in rank of two, three and four? No survey held to know which cities became a tourist destination in Indonesia town after Bali. But it can not be denied that in the past, Yogyakarta is the second tourist destination after Bali.
Unfortunately, now Yogyakarta is no longer the second destination of tourist. Some regions in Indonesia have been build and promote their tourism assets so that both local and foreign tourists come to visit their area. While Yogyakarta that once the second destination after Bali seems left behind other cities.
In the early 1990s foreign tourists visiting Yogyakarta on average of 850,000 people per year. Even the tourists had ever reached 1,000,000 people. But this recent year - the numbers are never more than 180 thousand foreign tourist who come to visit Yogyakarta .
The majority of foreign tourists visiting Yogyakarta are from Europe, like the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and England. The foreign guests, apart from the group have subscribed at the certain hotel in Yogyakarta.
When you go around some tourist areas in Yogyakarta now, such as in complex Prawirotaman, Sosrowijayan, and Malioboro, you will see many foreign tourists walking around or sitting in a cafe. Even on the road is often seen trvelling with pedicab. But the number of foreign tourists visiting Yogyakarta as has not yet met the target.
There are many reasons why the number of foreign tourists visiting Yogyakarta declined, one of them is the high price of Yogyakarta tour packages offered to tourists. Of course, travelers will choose to visit other areas in Indoesia that provide tour packages at lower prices.
