Goa Gajah, A Historic Tourist Attraction in Bali


Goa Gajah,  Bali =>> This time we will  visit Goa Gajah (Elephanat Cave), a historic tourist attraction that is located in a village some distance from Denpasar. Goa Gajah is at Bedulu, Blahbatuh district, Gianyar regency. You will need  approximately 1 hour from Denpasar. Goa Gajah is a historic attractions as well as religious tourist attraction. The cave is the place to perform Buddhist hermitage and Shiva also. It has so many historical artifacts. And of course for those of tourist  who is not Buddhists can still enjoy the beauty of the natural landscape surrounding  that show  rice fields and little river views. Goa Gajah is built on the point bank of  river where the water then flows into the river Patanu. Goa Gajah word actually comes from the word 'Lwa Gajah', the name of the monastery or hermitage for Buddhist monk in Buddhism. The name was found on papyrus Negarakertagama compiled by Mpu Prapanca in 1365 AD.
 
Word Lwa or Lwah (Loh) means river. Therefore, what is meant here is the hermitage located at Gajah River or in Air Gajah. In the year 1103 Saka inscriptions issued by King Jayapangus mentioned that Air Gajah (Elephant Water)  is a hermitage for Shiva.

This site was built in the 11th century AD, when King Sri Astasura Ratna Bumi Banten power. Experts believe this cave as a hermitage for finding niches inside the cave. In addition there is also a pool with seven statues that are holding the holy water not far from the cave. This statue is a symbol of the seven sacred rivers in India. Land of the two major religions Hinduism and Buddhism originated.

If you travel to Bali and visit Goa Gajah, you have to go down the stairs. But do not worry, your tiredness down the stairs will pay off when you see a beautiful natural setting with the green leaves of the trees that grow around Goa. While at the bottom, you will feel the peace that gives inner satisfaction as the rush of water flowing from the fountain statue caught by your ear.
