Barong Dance, A Beautiful Sacred Dance of Bali=>> Besides the famous
Kecak Dance, Bali also has Barong Dance. Never heard about it? Or never see the
performances of Barong Dance? If not,
you must immediately reschedule for
travel to Bali. Because visiting Bali and not see the Barong Dance is a big
lost for you. Barong dance as the part of cultural tourism in Bali is a typical
dance from the Pre-Hindu culture. This dance describes the battle between
righteousness (Dharma) and evil (adharma). The form by virtue played by Barong,
the dancers who wear costumes a quadruped, while a form of crime is played by
Rangda, the sinister figure with two pointy fangs in his mouth. The fight between
Barong and Rangda is a reflection of human life. Since the fight still present until
today, the battle of virtues and crime never stop.
Actually there are
six types of commonly displayed Barong Dance in Bali, in which Barong Ket,
Barong Bangkal (pig), Elephant Barong, Barong Asu (dog), Barong Brutuk, and
Barong-barongan. But most often played in dance performances for tourists is
Barong Ket, Barong Keket or who have a fairly complete costume and dance. Barong
dance depicting a blend of lions, tigers, and cows. Barong is played by two
dancers, one dancer took up positions in front of the motion plays Barong head
and front legs, while the second is behind the dancers playing the Barong hind
legs and tail.
Barong Dance is
actually observed that has a lot in common with the Lion Dance, a dance typical
of Chinese society. But the Barong Dance has the advantage of the element of
the story in the dance.
In the mythology of
the pre-Hindu tradition Barong a mythical animal believed to be a defender and
protector of goodness. Therefore by the Balinese Barong is very sacred. In the
Barong Dance performance often seen as a
form of dance which is a separate dance, Keris dance (Kris Dance), in which the
dancers thrust a traditional dagger into their own body.
